Whatever you love, you are

K의 2주 휴가를 틈타 미국 동남쪽 해안가 구경을 하러 여행을 가려니 1박 여행 짐이 일주일 짐 사이즈다. 애 짐 속에 내 짐은 ziploc 1quart짜리 하나. 얘는 수족구에서 회복기, 난 따가운 목과 약한 몸살 중에 유일하게 멀쩡한 체력을 유지한 K에게 며칠째 얘를 맡기고 이번 여행도 나름 편하게 다녀온 첫 애기동반 1박 여행이었다.

아무리 아파도 바다 구경은 해야지. 도착한 날 오후 꿈 크게 비키니 수영복에 수영기저귀까지 채워놨었는데 지는 해도 너무 뜨거워 꿈을 접고 발만 담궈 봄. 

그리고 밥 먹이고 느긋하게 그늘에서 쉬는 동안 설사 끈적하게 해 놓고 카시트 커버에 묻혀 놓은 채

난 이때다 싶어 풀장에서 열심히 놈. 

그리고 그 다음 날 새벽부터 일찍 바닷가를 거닌답시고 준비. 

K의 휴가기간동안 K의 손맛에 맛을 들여 나한테 안겨 있다가도 K만 등장하면 징징대면서 아빠한테 팔을 내민다. 컨디션 아주 편할 때만 나랑 놀아주는 인내심 발휘. (감사해야 할지 말아야 할지... ㅡㅡ.) 

나도 못 이기는 척, 전화기/카메라만 가볍게 들고 여기저기 거니는 한편, K는 계속 얠 안고 다니고, 먹이고...

Fans go wild for the Salted Caramel and "Theo Chocolate" (fudgy chocolate ice cream drizzled with fair-trade Theo chocolate bars) flavors. Another favorite: Balsamic Strawberry (made with locally grown strawberries and a honey balsamic reduction). The original Molly Moon's is located on North 45th Street, though the company also operates four other stores in the Seattle area.

With its setting in the heart of intellectual academia, Toscanini's draws a cerebral clientele that sparks fresh ideas for bold flavors.

Kulfi, an intense blend with pistachios and cardamom, was inspired by a Harvard professor from India. Other notable gelato flavors include Grape-Nut, Pear Chardonnay sorbet, and the beloved Burnt Caramel. The secret behind owner Gus Rancatore's much-admired caramel concoction: Heating the sugar until the crème caramel — the golden delicious crust — appears on the surface (much like a crème brulee) and then off-setting the prominent sugary taste with cold cream and milk.

Favorite Flavor: Brambleberry Crisp (Cost: $4.50)

Jeni Britton Bauer's handmade sorbet, frozen yogurt, and ice cream push the boundaries of dessert artisanship. What makes her batches so delicious? Key ingredients, like grass-grazed cream, whole fruits, and fair-trade vanilla. You'll find Jeni's original shop in the North Market of Columbus. There are currently eight other stores spread across the state and two additional locations in Nashville.

2박 3일의 밴쿠버 여행이 끝나는 날 아침은 좀 흐리고 서늘한 날씨에 맞게 뜻뜻한 국물을 먹고 싶었다. 그래서 호텔에서 2블록 채 되지 않는 거리의 베트남쌀국수 집에서 9시 문열자마자 들어가 주문. 

K는 베트남식 김치 샌드위치를 먹음. (한국식이 먹고 싶은가보다...) 

그리고 집으로 돌아오는 길에 나의 belated birthday present 를 사러 Apple store 에. 딱 2년 전 아직 데이트하던 시절에 사 줬던 노트북 맛이 갈락말락 한지 벌써 1년. 꾸준히 (그러나 간접적으로) "이 노트북 너무 느려..," "창 하나 여는데 1분 기다려야 해," 등의 불편사항을 나눴던 게 효과가 있었던 셈.  

정작 본인은 옷이든, 신발이든, 컴퓨터든 돈을 많이 안 들이는 편인데, 이 맥북에어는 사 주면서도 좋은가보다. 증정식 기념사진 한 컷, 사들고 나가는데에도 가방을 나보고 매고 가 보라며 별걸 다 시킨다. 하지만 THANK YOU. :)

그래서 (모처럼 프렌치토스트가 먹고 싶다하는 한마디에) 밤 12시가 다 되어 가는 시간, 다음 날 아침을 미리 챙겨 주며 감사의 뜻을 표했다. 

로드트립/여행 다니는 중 가장 기대되는 시간은 아침 시간이다. 웬지 일찍부터 나가 사 먹는  아침식사는 내가 지금 여행 중이라는 걸 더욱 실감나게 해 주는 것 같다. 

하지만 패스트푸드 아침식사는 예외. 

Tim Hortons 라는 패스트푸드는 뉴욕 아침에 스타벅스에 사람 기다리듯 줄을 서 있길래 우리도 바로 옆빌딩으로 들어가 breakfast wrap 에 hashbrown 세트를 먹고, 또 여유롭게 길 건너편에서 모닝커피. 세수도 안 하고 나갔더니 커피가 들어가기 전엔 계속 비몽사몽. 

그리고 방에 돌아와 점심 먹으러 나가기 전까지 아무런 할일 없이 다른 나라 케이블 방송을 보면서 시간 때우는 것도 여유롭다. 

점심도 Robson St. 에서 테이크아웃으로 사들고 나가 

Vancouver Public Library Square 앞에 앉아 집에선 귀한 햇살을 맞으며 사람 구경하며 후딱.

그리고는 스타벅스가 아닌 local 커피 체인을 시도. 

지난 며칠은 하루에 평균 2-3잔의 커피를 마시고도 잠만 잘 잔다. 

그리고는 도서관 안에도 훑어 보고 (통유리 벽으로 적당히 들어오는 햇살이 꼭 야외에서 공부하는 느낌을 줘 좋음) 

또 정처없이 걸어다니다 오후엔 몇시간 내내 수영장에서 휴식. 

이런 생활 매일 할 수 있겠다. 

저녁은 밴쿠버 다운타운의 북편에 있는 Vancouver Convention Center 앞으로 쭈욱 걸어가 간단한 저녁거리를 해안가에서 먹어 치우고

자전거를 대여해서 Stanley Park 의 둘레를 쭈욱 돌 수 있는 seawall 시작점까지 산책. 

(벤치 옆에는 개인 핸드폰/노트북 컴퓨터 밧데리 충전이 가능한 시설이 설치되어 있는 것 같았다.) 

산책 내내 언제쯤 이런 환경에서 살 수 있을까를 상상하고 고민하고 의논함. 

밴쿠버 기후는 워싱턴보다 훨씬 나은 것 같음. 더 북쪽이면서 같은 해안가인데 왜일까.

비 내리거나 흐린 하루하루의 일기예보가 그리 다르지 않은 며칠 중 그나마 날씨가 가장 좋은 며칠을 골라 밴쿠버로 향했다. 

작년에 놀러갔을 때엔 다운타운에서 좀 떨어진 호텔이라 조금 불편했던 기억에, 이번엔 Robson Street 에 위치한 호텔을 예약. 도착하자마자 BC Place (축구경기장) 로 향하는 Whitecaps (축구팀) 팬들을 구경할 수 있었다. 저 중에 이영표의 얼굴도 보였었는데...

난리법석으로 데모하듯 행진하는 사람들을 길 건너편에서 구경하며 따라 나섰다가 

지난 며칠 우리의 daily routine 이 되어 버린 스타벅스를 찾았다. (스타벅스보다 더 맛있는 커피 많지만, 웬지 그 고유의 스타벅스 그린을 보는 순간 들어가고 싶은 생각이 드는 건 그러한 대기업 마케팅의 술수에 완전히 넘어간 소비자 중 하나인 나도 어쩔 수가 없다.)

커피 한잔을 들고 Robson St.을 오르락 내리락 걸으며 느낀 건 벤쿠버 사람들은 전반적으로 컬러풀하다는 것. 

Vancouver Public Library 앞에나 Vancouver Art Gallery 앞에나 여유롭고 자유로운 모습의 사람들이 보기 좋았다. 화창한 날씨 때문인지 길가의 가게들도, 까페들도, 심지어는 homeless들도 깔끔하고 컬러풀하게 차려입은 느낌. 

Vancouver Art Gallery 북편에서는 Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration 이 진행 중. 

(난 텐트 중 하나에서 인도음식을 팔기를 기대했지만, 이미 늦은 시간 때문인지 음식은 없었던 걸로 기억한다.) 

밴쿠버에서 시작했다는 Lululemon 매장에도 들어가 보고, 

지도 펼칠 새도 없이 마냥 좋은 날씨에 감탄하며 걸어다녔던 것 같다. 

콜로세움 모양의 도서관 빌딩에서부터 다양한 디자인의 주상복합 빌딩들까지, 시애틀과도 좀 다른 풍의 openness 를 느낄 수 있었음. 

그리고 밥 시간.

K는 앞으로 어느 동네/나라를 여행하든 그 동네의 burrito 는 다 먹어보자 한다.

배를 기분 좋게 불린 후, 바로 집으로 돌아가 비키니로 갈아 입어... 

8시 반 저녁에 아무도 없어 개인 풀처럼 잠수하고, 돌고, 물구나무 서고, 둥둥 떠 있고... 여유로운 휴가 첫날 보냄. 

(하지만 hot tub 은 K 와 어느 다른 아저씨가 매우 어색한 몇분을 함께..) 

주말 아침마다 해장을 필요로 하는 사촌과 함께 지내는 몇주간 내장탕/설렁탕은 골고루 찾아 다니며 먹어 볼 수 있었음.

집 건너편 양지설렁탕이 주로 가는 아침밥집이었으나, 이 날은 삼각지의 평양집으로.

들깨가루가 최고.

지난 4월 말 부산엘 다녀왔다.

그리고 부모님이랑 엄청 먹고 (해운대 암소갈비. 산나물/명이, 양)

친구랑 엄청 먹고 (남포동 충무김밥)

부산은 몇번 가도 또 가고 싶은 곳.

1. Hana Hwy (Hwy 360), Maui, Hawaii: 38 miles from Pauwela to Hana

The most spectacular coastal drive in all Hawaii, the Hana Hwy winds its way deep into jungle valleys and back out above a rugged coastline. Not for the faint of heart, the road is a real cliff-hugger, with 54 one-lane bridges, roadside waterfalls and head-spinning views. Gas up, pack a lunch and bring your swimsuit!

2. Turquoise Trail (Hwy 14), New Mexico: 45 miles from Albuquerque to Santa Fe

The Turquoise Trail has been a major trade route since at least 2000 BC. Today it’s the scenic back road between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, lined with quirky communities. Sights along the way include Tinkertown (an animated miniature village) and gorgeous desert scenery.

3. Columbia River Hwy (Hwy 30), Oregon: 74 miles from Troutdale to The Dalles

Finished in 1915, this gorgeous winding highway was the first paved road in the Northwest and America’s first scenic highway. It was also part of the Oregon Trail and the last leg of Lewis and Clark’s expedition. There are gushing waterfalls in spring, wildflower displays in summer and awe-inspiring views all year round. Hikers have plenty of trailheads to choose from, and cyclists can cruise two stretches of the old highway renovated for non-vehicle use.

4. Pig Trail Byway (Hwy 23), Arkansas: 80 miles from Ozark to Eureka Springs

Just north of the town of Ozark (no, you are not yet in the Ozark Mountains), this spectacular drive is lined with wild echinacea and lilies, and climbs through Ozark National Forest and into the mountains. This is an excellent way to reach the friendly town of Eureka Springs.

5. Hwy 12, Utah: 107 miles from Torrey to Bryce Canyon National Park

Locals call this ‘color country’ for the eye-popping hues that saturate this Southwest landscape. This most scenic of roads passes through Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, ending at the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park.

6. Overseas Highway (Hwy 1), Florida: 160 miles from Miami to Key West

Large parts of this divine island-hopping highway were built on bridges left from the hurricane-destroyed Overseas Railroad. Now, streams of travelers swarm down from the mainland to indulge in the alluring jade-green waters, laid-back island lifestyle, great fishing and idyllic snorkeling and diving. It ain’t called ‘Margaritaville’ for nothing!

7. Delmarva Peninsula (Hwys 50 and 13): 210 miles from Annapolis, Maryland, to Virginia Beach, Virginia

These unbroken miles of bird-dotted wetlands and serene waterscapes are hours from one of America’s busiest urban corridors. Virginia’s Eastern Shore is full of dock towns where watermen live off the Chesapeake Bay, and has the feel of a remote, maritime escape. The flat topography is made for bicycling.

8. Route 66 (initial section): 300 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to St Louis, Missouri

America’s ‘Mother Road’ kicks off in Chicago on Adams St just west of Michigan Ave, but in Illinois, much of the old road exists only in scattered sections paralleling the interstate. Still, there are many roadside attractions and oddball stops to be taken, plus pie shops and drive-ins for eateries.

9. Pacific Coast Hwy (Hwy 1), California: 332 miles from San Francisco to Santa Barbara

No trip to California is complete without a jaunt along the almost surreally scenic Hwy 1, one of the US’s most iconic roads. Slipping out of the City by the Bay, the narrow road ribbons above the ocean, overlooking beaches cast like pearls on one side, and soaring redwood trees on the other. Slow down - this region wants to be savored, not gulped.

10. Blue Ridge Parkway: 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina

The southwestern tip of Virginia is the most rugged part of the state. Turn onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and you’ll immediately plunge into dark strands of dogwood and fir, fast streams and white waterfalls. Wildflowers bloom in spring and fall colors are spectacular
