What the Dog Saw 는 말콤 글랟웰의 단편기사들 중 하나의 제목이다. 이 기사에서는 개들의 심리 --> 인간의 심리를 다루고, 다른 기사에서는 케첩을, 다른 어느 기사에서는 job interview 또는 범죄심리를, 그리고 또다른 기사는 염색약에 대해 얘기한다. The New Yorker의 콜럼니스트란 이 사람은 참 여러가지의 랜덤한 토픽에 대해서 꽤 심도있게 얘기하면서도 전문가가 아닌 평민들도 깊은 관심을 가지게끔 설명하는 능력이 있는 건지, 난 이 책이 매우 교육적이기도 하면서 소장할만한 가치의 흥미로운 책이라 생각한다.
푸켓에서 읽을거리가 떨어져 찾아 들어갔던 영어책방에서 급하게 고른 책 치고는 매우 흡족함.
내용 중 나의 애완견 위시리스트에 있었던 pit bull에 대한 정보도 있었음:
Pit bulls, descendants of the bulldogs used in the nineteenth century for bull baiting and dogfighting, have been bred for "gameness," and thus a lowered inhibition to aggression. Most dogs fight as a last resort, when staring and growling fail. A pit bull is willing to fight with little or no provocation. Pit bulls seem to have a high tolerance for pain, making it possible for them to fight to the point of exhaustion. Whereas guart dogs like German shepherds usually attempt to restrain those they perceive to be threats by biting and holding, pit bulls try to inflict the maximum amount of damange on an opponent. They bite, hold, shake, and tear. They don't growl or assume an aggressive facial expression as warning. They just attack.
