10. Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain(Photo: Michael Turkel/Brooklyn Pharmacy & Soda Fountain)
Brooklyn, N.Y.
Favorite Flavor: Mint Chocolate Chip (Cost: $3.75)

Run by Peter Freeman and Gia Giasullo, Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain adds an inventive twist to classic flavors with ingredients like toffee and maple egg cream. Inside the Farmacy (or "The Farm" for those in the know), you'll find an eclectic mix of creamy malts, floats, shakes, and egg creams. Standouts include the "Rocket Shake" (a milkshake laced with fresh coffee and scoops of coffee ice cream) and the "Flatbush Ave. Float" (a blend of your choice of ice cream layered with chocolate or vanilla egg cream).

Should you prefer a decadent sundae rather than a float, try the "Sundae of Broken Dreams." This frosted dessert (vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel sauce, whipped cream, and crispy pretzels) keeps customers smiling.

Charleston, S.C.
Favorite Flavor: Beet (Cost: $3)

For a rich treat, try Cioccolato Scuro (Bitter Chocolate), a favorite among loyal fans. You can order a cup or cone at 13th Street in Philadelphia or at one of the other three locations in Pennsylvania.

(Courtesy of Sweet Action Ice Cream )7. Sweet Action Ice Cream
Denver
Favorite Flavor: Strawberry Balsamic (Cost: $2.75)

With 24 delectable flavors enriched with local ingredients, this trendy shop values quality as much as inventiveness. Its eclectic blends were not under the radar for long. Food & Wine labeled Sweet Action "One of the best ice cream spots in the U.S." and USA Today praised the parlor as the best ice cream shop in Colorado. From Salted Butterscotch to Lemon Ricotta, Sweet Action Ice Cream crafts each variety with care. For pure sweetness, give the Strawberry Balsamic or Pistachio flavors a whirl.

6. Graeter's(Photo: Courtesy of Graeter's)
Cincinnati
Favorite Flavor: Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip (Cost: $2.75)

This fourth-generation landmark creamery dates back to 1870, when Louis C. Graeter crafted the original confection in Cincinnati. The secret behind Graeter's recipes is the elaborate French Pot swirling process. Fresh cream and egg custard are gradually folded together until they reach a thick texture and one-of-a-kind rich taste.

Then, fresh ingredients are sprinkled in, like liquid gourmet chocolate and Madagascar vanilla beans. Signature flavors include Butter Pecan (endorsed by Oprah Winfrey), Cinnamon, and Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. Other Graeter's branches can be found in Columbus and Dayton, Ohio, and Lexingtonand Louisville, Ky.

(Courtesy of Sweet Republic)5. Sweet Republic
Scottsdale, Ariz.

Since 2008, Sweet Republic owners Jan Wichayanuparp and Helen Yung have attracted ice cream connoisseurs with their homemade batches. The milk and creams used are provided by local dairy farms, while tasty toppings, including marshmallows, brownies, and waffles, are all made by hand.

And that's not all: From its birchwood ice cream sticks to its recycled glass bottles, this shop prides itself on its eco-friendliness. To indulge your taste buds with an extra burst of flavor, try the zesty Honey Blue Cheese or decadent Mayan Chocolate flavors. You'll find Sweet Republic headquartered on Scottsdale's Shea Boulevard. Sweet Republic products are also sold at select grocery stores throughout the state.

4. Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream(Photo: Kathryn Barnard/Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream )
Seattle
Favorite Flavor: Salted Caramel (Cost: $3.45)

Since opening in spring 2008, this beloved Seattle ice creamery draws dessert fanatics far and wide. In fact, Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream's handheld delights have become so popular that customers are willing to brave long lines for a single scoop.

Fans go wild for the Salted Caramel and "Theo Chocolate" (fudgy chocolate ice cream drizzled with fair-trade Theo chocolate bars) flavors. Another favorite: Balsamic Strawberry (made with locally grown strawberries and a honey balsamic reduction). The original Molly Moon's is located on North 45th Street, though the company also operates four other stores in the Seattle area.

(Photo: Paige Green © 2012/Bi-Rite Creamery )3. Bi-Rite Creamery & Bakeshop
San Francisco
Favorite Flavor: Salted Caramel Ice Cream (Cost: $3.50)

For a cool, creamy batch crafted from scratch, look no further than Bi-Rite Creamery & Bakeshop, a San Francisco landmark set in the heart of the Mission District. Aside from its signature creamy scoops, Bi-Rite boasts a versatile selection of delicacies, ranging from ice cream sandwiches to popsicles to fully loaded sundaes. To top it off, owners Anne Walker and Kris Hoogerhyde pride themselves on making all the toppings — including marshmallows, peanut brittle, and hot fudge — at their adjoining bakery. For intense flavor, try their "dainty gentleman" signature sundae (honey-lavender ice cream lathered in hot fudge, sea salt, and blood orange olive oil).

2. Toscanini's(Photo: James Leighton/Toscanini's )
Cambridge, Mass.
Favorite Flavor: Burnt Caramel (Cost: $4.25)

With brag-worthy accolades from the New York Times, People magazine, Bon Appetit, and Gourmet magazine (to name a few), it would seem misleading not to include this Boston-area gelato shop on our list. With its setting in the heart of intellectual academia, Toscanini's draws a cerebral clientele that sparks fresh ideas for bold flavors.

Kulfi, an intense blend with pistachios and cardamom, was inspired by a Harvard professor from India. Other notable gelato flavors include Grape-Nut, Pear Chardonnay sorbet, and the beloved Burnt Caramel. The secret behind owner Gus Rancatore's much-admired caramel concoction: Heating the sugar until the crème caramel — the golden delicious crust — appears on the surface (much like a crème brulee) and then off-setting the prominent sugary taste with cold cream and milk.

(Photo: Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams)1. Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams
Columbus, Ohio
Favorite Flavor: Brambleberry Crisp (Cost: $4.50)

With its broad selection of creative flavors — ranging from Wildberry Lavender to Riesling Poached Pear Sorbet to Brambleberry Crisp — it's no wonder Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams has foodies swooning across the nation. Jeni Britton Bauer's handmade sorbet, frozen yogurt, and ice cream push the boundaries of dessert artisanship. What makes her batches so delicious? Key ingredients, like grass-grazed cream, whole fruits, and fair-trade vanilla. You'll find Jeni's original shop in the North Market of Columbus. There are currently eight other stores spread across the state and two additional locations in Nashville.

1. Hana Hwy (Hwy 360), Maui, Hawaii: 38 miles from Pauwela to Hana

The most spectacular coastal drive in all Hawaii, the Hana Hwy winds its way deep into jungle valleys and back out above a rugged coastline. Not for the faint of heart, the road is a real cliff-hugger, with 54 one-lane bridges, roadside waterfalls and head-spinning views. Gas up, pack a lunch and bring your swimsuit!

2. Turquoise Trail (Hwy 14), New Mexico: 45 miles from Albuquerque to Santa Fe

The Turquoise Trail has been a major trade route since at least 2000 BC. Today it’s the scenic back road between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, lined with quirky communities. Sights along the way include Tinkertown (an animated miniature village) and gorgeous desert scenery.

3. Columbia River Hwy (Hwy 30), Oregon: 74 miles from Troutdale to The Dalles

Finished in 1915, this gorgeous winding highway was the first paved road in the Northwest and America’s first scenic highway. It was also part of the Oregon Trail and the last leg of Lewis and Clark’s expedition. There are gushing waterfalls in spring, wildflower displays in summer and awe-inspiring views all year round. Hikers have plenty of trailheads to choose from, and cyclists can cruise two stretches of the old highway renovated for non-vehicle use.

4. Pig Trail Byway (Hwy 23), Arkansas: 80 miles from Ozark to Eureka Springs

Just north of the town of Ozark (no, you are not yet in the Ozark Mountains), this spectacular drive is lined with wild echinacea and lilies, and climbs through Ozark National Forest and into the mountains. This is an excellent way to reach the friendly town of Eureka Springs.

5. Hwy 12, Utah: 107 miles from Torrey to Bryce Canyon National Park

Locals call this ‘color country’ for the eye-popping hues that saturate this Southwest landscape. This most scenic of roads passes through Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, ending at the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park.

6. Overseas Highway (Hwy 1), Florida: 160 miles from Miami to Key West

Large parts of this divine island-hopping highway were built on bridges left from the hurricane-destroyed Overseas Railroad. Now, streams of travelers swarm down from the mainland to indulge in the alluring jade-green waters, laid-back island lifestyle, great fishing and idyllic snorkeling and diving. It ain’t called ‘Margaritaville’ for nothing!

7. Delmarva Peninsula (Hwys 50 and 13): 210 miles from Annapolis, Maryland, to Virginia Beach, Virginia

These unbroken miles of bird-dotted wetlands and serene waterscapes are hours from one of America’s busiest urban corridors. Virginia’s Eastern Shore is full of dock towns where watermen live off the Chesapeake Bay, and has the feel of a remote, maritime escape. The flat topography is made for bicycling.

8. Route 66 (initial section): 300 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to St Louis, Missouri

America’s ‘Mother Road’ kicks off in Chicago on Adams St just west of Michigan Ave, but in Illinois, much of the old road exists only in scattered sections paralleling the interstate. Still, there are many roadside attractions and oddball stops to be taken, plus pie shops and drive-ins for eateries.

9. Pacific Coast Hwy (Hwy 1), California: 332 miles from San Francisco to Santa Barbara

No trip to California is complete without a jaunt along the almost surreally scenic Hwy 1, one of the US’s most iconic roads. Slipping out of the City by the Bay, the narrow road ribbons above the ocean, overlooking beaches cast like pearls on one side, and soaring redwood trees on the other. Slow down - this region wants to be savored, not gulped.

10. Blue Ridge Parkway: 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina

The southwestern tip of Virginia is the most rugged part of the state. Turn onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and you’ll immediately plunge into dark strands of dogwood and fir, fast streams and white waterfalls. Wildflowers bloom in spring and fall colors are spectacular

San Luis Obispo

Los Angeles: Authentic roots

Souvenir stands give it a strictly-for-tourists rep, but Olvera Street anchors El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, where L.A. truly started. There’s good Angeleno history at Avila Adobe; even better margaritas and Mexican food at La Golondrina ($$; 213/628-4349). elpueblo.lacity.org

Los Angeles: Art stop

Miracle Mile’s the classic nickname for the mid-Wilshire stretch of Wilshire Boulevard. These days it should be called Masterpiece Way—two major expansions in three years have pushed the L.A. County Museum of Art (pictured) to the top of culture lovers’ must-see lists. $15; lacma.org

Carpinteria: Call it Carp

That’s the locals’ moniker for one of California’s prettiest little beach towns. Stroll down Linden Avenue for surf shops and a great steak joint (the Palms, $$; 805/684-3811), then wade at Carpinteria State Beach. carpinteriachamber.org

Avila Beach: Coast newbie

Meet the beach town you haven’t heard of—Avila Beach, tucked along San Luis Obispo Bay. What’s here? A cool old pier (avilabeachpier.com) with two good restaurants: Pete’s Pierside Cafe ($) and Olde Port Inn ($$$). And hot tubs at nearby Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort (from $13/hour; sycamoresprings.com)

San Luis Obispo: Smile

A recent book named this university town one of the happiest places on Earth. One source of local joy is SLO’s Thursday Night Downtown Farmers’ Market, maybe the best in the nation. downtownslo.com

Soledad: Hidden gem

Just off 101, Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (831/678-2586) is simple and sweet, with a pretty grove of Mission olives.

Santa Clara: Seoul patrol

One of the nation’s biggest Korean communities congregates here in Silicon Valley: Center of food and shopping action is El Camino Real between Lawrence and San Tomas Expressways. Good bets include the charming Chasaengwon Tea House (pictured; 408/246-0700).

Palo Alto: Smartville

You don’t have to bleed Cardinal red to enjoy Stanford University: Rodin-watch at Cantor Arts Center (museum.stanford.edu), then nab a sandwich or a salad at adjacent Cool Café ($$; 650/725-4758).

Sausalito: More than skin deep

Pretty but familiar can be the dig against the village on San Francisco Bay. But the hotel and spa at Cavallo Point Lodge (from $360; cavallopoint.com) are knockouts, and you’ll find intriguing shopping around Caledonia Street

Ukiah: Sparkling waters

Jack London loved Vichy Mineral Springs Resort (pictured; $30/2 hours; vichysprings.com); you will too. Soak in the carbonated 90° mineral baths or a 104° pool. Then stare up at coast redwoods at Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve (707/937-5804).

Oh well.

하지만 우리에겐 In and Out Burgers 가 있다! K 친구들이나 내 친구들이나 캘리포니아에 가면 꼭 먹어보라는 In and Out 버거. Worth 6 dollars (for two).

AMAZING.

딤섬은 한 dish 에 $3.50-4.50 밖에 하지 않는다: stir-fried string beans, shanghai buns, and mixed-meat buns. Chicken with black bean sauce 는 별도로 주문.

미국 아저씨의 말에 의하면 "They will take orders, so not everyone has to do the omakase ... But NEVER EVER ask for the california roll."

그리고 this was the first day we were in the beach water together. at the same time.

Fried scallops and oysters combo plate.

But so happy.
